Having reached a cross roads in my life….and in my late thirties….I cast aside my fears and turned on to a bumpy, dusty side road.
Instead of opting for the detached house, two children and a dog called spot……I fell in love with a vintage VW high top splitscreen.
I know to some it may seem like a massive leap from everyday life…..but it felt right……..like putting on your old slippers…..a feeling from deep within, with all the love and support from Mr Polly’s Parlour we went for it.
September 2011 was a big month for us, the deposit given….the anticipation of waiting…..was the van even going to turn up at our doorstep?
The Hungarians were good to their word…they drove for two whole days and through the night…it was a real adventure for them……. their first ever visit to the UK!
At this point we knew we wanted to change our lives…but that’s a far as we got….!
A VW high top was a commercial van which was produced to carry, load and serve……so a fitting tribute was to lovingly restore her and use her once again……I was sure everybody would fall in love with her vintage quirkiness and classic looks……as I did……a real icon of the 60’s.
It’s impossible to say what exactly my inspiration was behind wanting to convert her into a vintage ice cream van………maybe the combination of memories of the seaside, camping, ice cream, family fun all wrapped up together………..pure nostalgia…..Oh and of course my absolute love of VW campers….and the way they make you feel…..so so so happy!
You’ll look back in a years time and realise all the stressing and hard work was worth it. And be glad you took the plunge.

Hey Polly, I’m loving your project!!! Check out our restoration, we have not looked back and the hard work/risks/time have all been worth while. I’m so glad our project is finished and we still can’t believe the support we get so I know it will be worth your while. It would be magic if our camper ‘Elvis’ can meet ‘Florence’ one day……!
