Vintage Ice Cream Van. Our childhood memories of ice cream ♡

I grew up surrounded by a big family……..holidays in our caravan hold wonderful memories for me………mum and dad picking us up from school with the caravan in tow and we were off! The car was packed with grandparents, dogs and much much more. We would always gravitate towards the sea or countryside…….its here we would always find time to visit the ‘okey man’……our childhood name for an ice cream man!

I never knew where the ‘okey man’ came from….but when I started writing this blog I had to find out……a few long phone calls later and some serious googling. The ‘okey’ actually originated from ‘Hokey Pokey’…..slang for ice cream in the 19th century, and as children do….we dropped the H….and from then on it became the ‘okey man’.

Mr Polly’s Parlour favourite childhood memory was walking along Redcar seafront with his nana & grandad…..they would always stop for a ‘lemon top’…..creamy whipped ice cream with a swirl of lemon sorbet on top……WOW!

Growing up with grandparents near the seaside was alot of fun……….and the seaside would always play a big part in his life…………countless ice creams on numerous beaches…….

During the 70‘s-80‘s ice cream vans were really common…..the ice cream came in different shapes and sizes…..names and colours…..such as Funny feet, Skyray, Fab, Rockets, Screwball, The Incredible Hulk, 99’s, Strawberry Splits…..these were the days when every lolly you ate had a joke on the stick!!!

The ice cream vans would always come @5.30pm and if we were lucky we were allowed to run down the street…..with everybody else…..and choose!
